With the recently enacted national health reform law, access to care for people with chronic conditions
is sure to improve, however the law will not be fully implemented until 2014. The Health Share Card
initiative can provide immediate relief to those without adequate insurance.
The Health Share Card utilizes care managers, stored value card technology, and a web-based platform to
improve access to healthcare services. Through use of the card technology, resources can be focused
on the social and medical services needed to control diabetes. This will ensure that care can be
delivered at the most cost-effective, appropriate location.
Healthcare providers, public programs, charity organizations, social service agencies, drug manufacturers
and community institutions (e.g. supermarket chains or YMCA/YWCAs) can all contribute resources to
this initiative. The card's multiple "purses" and "intelligent rules" afford them
the knowledge that their resources will be well-managed and only withdrawn from the card as the cardholder
pays for doctors' visits, purchases specific drugs at a pharmacy, or buys healthy foods.
